As in the past our research thrust has been towards experimental investigation and the development of unique apparatus that enables the study specific fundamental phenomena that are of interest to member companies. The following are examples of recently developed apparatus and techniques for such purposes:

  • X-ray fluoroscopy apparatus to study blast furnace burdening phenomena
  • IR-heater with instrumented TC system to quantify heat transfer through mold-flux films
  • An ultra sensitive TG/DTA system with humidity controlled to study scaling
  • A combined EBSD-CSLM procedure to quantify grain boundary properties on oxidation kinetics
  • A specialized vacuum induction furnace for studying transient de-oxidation reactions
  • The double hot thermocouple technique with application of electrical potential
  • A sessile drop apparatus capable of extremely low oxygen potentials
  • The development of a casting apparatus to study initial solidification
  • A CSLM experimental procedure to study inclusion separation and dissolution
